Neighbourhood Impacts

Those impacted by new LRT stations include:

  • Downtown neighbourhood
  • Central McDougall neighbourhood
  • Spruce Avenue neighbourhood
  • Commuters

Road Closures & Schedule

During construction, some streets will be periodically and temporarily closed or detoured.

Construction Schedule – Fall 2011
Construction Schedule – Summer 2011

Permanently closed roads, with exception to emergency vehicles, include:

  • 105 St between 107 Ave and 108 Ave
  • 105 Ave between 103 St and 105 St
  • 104 St between 108 Ave and Kingsway Ave

Noise and Vibration

LRT construction is noisy and shaky. The City attempts to ease impacts by timing heavy construction during off-peak periods.

  • Once construction is complete vibration will stop.
  • The LRT runs on a continuous welded rail, a technology that minimizes noise vibration.
  • Noise levels will be equivalent to current city traffic noise.
  • Warning bells at pedestrian crossings will be directed at sidewalks to reduce noise.

Property Acquisition

Construction of large-scale urban infrastructure requires the City to acquire the land it does not own. Approximately 30 properties were identified for acquisition for the North LRT Network.

Removals

Building removals for the North LRT are complete. Altogether, 23 low-rise structures were removed from various properties the City acquired in order to build the North LRT:

  • Seven former commercial buildings on 105 Ave
  • Two apartment buildings on 105 St and 108 Ave
  • Former Legion building on Kingsway
  • Former McDonald's restaurant at 106 St and 111 Ave
  • Eleven houses from 106 St
  • Former Arby's restaurant at 106 St and Princess Elizabeth Ave

Tree relocations and removals for the North LRT are nearly complete. As construction progresses, occasional spot tree removals may be required.

Relocations

  • Utility providers such as EPCOR, ATCO, Telus and City of Edmonton Drainage are relocating power ducts, gas lines, sewers, etc. on and around the LRT right-of-way.
  • Work will impact some downtown businesses.

Security

Residents have expressed concern that LRT stations may attract homelessness and criminal activity.

The City applies the principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design to LRT projects. Principles like clear sightlines and community space have been shown to foster community ownership and minimize crime.
