Low-Floor Urban LRT

What's New

City Council recently approved an overall, long-term LRT Network Plan. Within that plan, it was agreed that low-floor technology and an urban-style LRT approach would be adopted for new routes in Edmonton not connected to the existing system. This approach will have many advantages that support Edmonton's long-term transportation goals.

High-Floor LRT Vehicles

The City of Edmonton opened its first LRT line in 1978, becoming the first city in North America to develop a modern LRT system. At present, Edmonton's LRT system uses high-floor technology. Most of the mechanical equipment on a high-floor LRT car is located at the bottom of the vehicle, which elevates passenger doors. High-floor LRT requires higher platforms and more infrastructure to enable passenger access.

Low-Floor LRT Vehicles

Most of the equipment on a low-floor LRT vehicle is located on the roof, which means passenger access can be provided at street level.

Low-floor LRT requires smaller stations and less infrastructure, making it easier to integrate stations within local surroundings.

Low-floor LRT stations also provide better pedestrian connections and fewer barriers to accessibility because ramps and steps are not needed. Many European cities and North American cities are now adopting new, low-floor LRT technologies - even in wintry climates.

The Future of LRT in Edmonton

Low-floor technology will be employed for new LRT routes in Edmonton not connected to the existing system. This provides an opportunity to integrate tracks and stations more easily into existing neighbourhoods with improved access. High-floor trains will be maintained on Edmonton’s existing system and the extension of those lines. Transfer stations and convenient connections will link these low-floor and high-floor LRT systems, as they do in many cities worldwide.
