Hiring Process

ETS uses a five-step hiring process to assess applicants. Applicants who do not meet the standard at any step will not progress to the next step. Successful completion of all the steps does not guarantee a job offer.

Five-Step Hiring Process

Step 1 - Job Posting
Step 2 - Screening Applicants
Step 3 - Testing
Step 4 - Interviewing
Step 5 - Selection

Step 1 - Job Posting

All interested candidates must submit an application on a current posting for the applicable position. Please note – only those candidates considered for the position will be contacted. Edmonton Transit's primary method of communications will be through e-mail.

  • View job postings or pick up application forms at the Employment Centre in City Hall.
  • View job postings online (including postings for all City of Edmonton jobs).
  • Job postings may be advertised in the Edmonton Journal, Edmonton Sun, Employment Centres, Federal Government Job Bank, or through other media outlets.

Step 2 - Screening Applicants

Applications are initially screened by Human Resources. Only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications will be contacted for the next step in the hiring process.

Step 3 - Testing

Applicants selected for testing will be contacted either by e-mail or a phone call. Testing requires a half day to complete. Applicants must be on time for testing and provide photo identification and an acceptable driver abstract at the pre-test registration. Failure to bring these two documents will disqualify applicants from taking the test. All qualified applicants must pass, or have already passed, the following tests:

  • A public relations video-test
  • A written English comprehension test (reading test)
  • A driving skills video-test
  • A map reading test (DATS applicants only)

Applicants will be notified of their test results either by e-mail, letter, or in their recruitment profile. To ensure the integrity and security of the ETS Operator Trainee hiring process, only a 'Successful/Unsuccessful' result will be disclosed to applicants. Detailed information about test results and scores will not be provided. Applicants that pass all tests will progress to the interview step.

Previously Tested Applicants

Previously tested applicants are only required to re-take the failed test(s). Applicants that have failed within the past 12 months (one year) will not be re-tested for the current posting. Re-testing is not automatic; applicants must re-apply on a future posting.

Step 4 - Interviewing

Applicants are interviewed by a panel of two that includes a representative from Human Resources and ETS Operations. Applicants should bring three work-related references to the interview. Applicants are assessed on competency (skills and abilities) in the following categories:

  1. Customer Service
  2. Safety & Emergency Response
  3. Vehicle Monitoring and Driving
  4. Personal Development
  5. Contributing to a Positive Work Enviroment
  6. Judgment/Problem Solving
  7. Personal Suitability

Step 5 - Selection

Operator candidates are selected on the basis of greatest demonstrated potential. Successful completion of all five steps does not guarantee employment. A minimum of two reference checks are conducted on each applicant.

Successful applicants must pass a Functional Abilities Recruitment Evaluation test (F.A.R.E.), a security clearance, a City of Edmonton medical examination and must successfully complete the ETS Operator/DATS Operator Training Program.

The training program for Conventional Transit Bus Operators is five weeks in duration, the DATS Operator training is four weeks, and the Community Service Bus Operator training is two weeks. Classes start regularly throughout the month, however, they are restricted by a maximum number of trainees permitted in each class.
