Hiring Process

Edmonton Transit (ETS) uses a five-step hiring process to assess applicants. Applicants who do not meet the standard at any stage in any step will not progress to the next step and the application process will be stopped. The steps are as follows:

Step 1 - Applying on a Positing
Step 2 - Application Screening
Step 3 - Pre-Employment Testing
Step 4 - The Interview
Step 5 - Selection

Step 1 - Applying on a Posting

Those interested in a driving career with ETS must submit an application on a current Posting. Look at the ‘Opening’ and ‘Closing’ dates carefully. Postings for operator positions appear for a limited time, so check often. Please note – only those candidates considered for the position will be contacted. Edmonton Transit's primary method of communications will be through e-mail.

  • View postings online on this website or at the Employment Centre at City Hall.
  • Postings may be advertised through other media sources (newsprint, radio/television or social media).

Step 2 - Application Screening

Applications are initially screened by Human Resources. Only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications will be contacted for pre-employment testing.

Step 3 - Pre-Employment Testing

Applicants selected for pre-employment testing will be contacted either by phone or by email and instructions will be given concerning when and where testing takes place as well as what to bring. Once pre-employment testing is complete, notification of results will be given by either by e-mail or by posting in the applicant recruitment profile. Only a “Successful / Unsuccessful” result will be disclosed to the applicant. Detailed information about the test results will not be provided. Applicants that are successful will be invited for an interview.

Step 4 - The Interview

Applicants will be contacted either by phone or by email and instructions will be given concerning when and where the interview will take place as well as what to bring. Interviews are conducted by a panel of two that includes a representative from Human Resources and from ETS Operations. Applicants are assessed during the interview on competencies (skills and abilities) in the following categories:

  • Customer service
  • Safety & emergency response
  • Vehicle monitoring and driving
  • Personal development
  • Contributing to a positive work environment
  • Judgment/Problem solving
  • Personal suitability

Applicants invited to the interview should bring three work-related references to the interview (must be supervisors or trainers). To be better prepared for the interview, please visit Preparing for the Interview.

Step 5 - Selection

A decision to offer employment is based upon a complete picture of the application and selection process. Applicants are selected on the basis of greatest demonstrated potential.

Employment is subject to successful reference checks, a successful security clearance, passing the Functional Abilities Recruitment Evaluation test (F.A.R.E.), a City of Edmonton medical examination and must successfully complete the operator training program. A driving assessment may be required.

The training program for Conventional Transit Operator is five weeks in duration, the DATS Operator training is four weeks, and the Community Service Operator training is two weeks. Transit operator training classes are restricted by a maximum number of trainees permitted in each class.

Successful completion of all five steps does not guarantee employment.

Previously Tested and Interviewed Applicants

Applicants that have been unsuccessful in the testing or interview process within the past 12 months (one year) will not be re-considered for a current posting. Please be aware that ETS is giving the first opportunity to applicants who are new at the process and have not participated in testing within the last 12 months (subject to change). Re-application is not automatic; applicants must re-apply on a future posting.
