About ETS

Edmonton Transit System (ETS) began when the Edmonton Radial Railway traveled its first streetcar route along 21 kilometres of track in the fall of 1908. That trip went up Jasper Avenue and passed through the downtown core. With a population of 18,500, and a modest four car fleet, Edmonton earned the unique distinction of the first prairie city with a public streetcar system. The first motorized bus route began in mid 1932, and the streetcar era was officially over as of 1951.

Today, Edmonton Transit System (ETS) operates a variety of public transportation services including buses, Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Disabled Adult Transportation Services (DATS).

This includes planning bus routes and schedules, operation of buses and LRT equipment, marketing and charter services. Edmonton Transit also operates Park 'n Ride services for special events, including football games, and major concerts.

We have fully integrated, customer-focused, transportation services that support economic development and quality of life in Edmonton, by

  • Providing a wide range of travel options
  • Optimizing use of existing infrastructure
  • Maintaining a safe and reliable transportation system
  • Targeting transportation improvements
  • Supporting initiatives and behaviours which limit and mitigate environmental and community impacts

Edmonton Transit's fleet encompasses over 847 diesel and trolley buses, and 29 community buses. The system covers more than 150 routes, including a LRT system with 37 vehicles and 11 stations. Edmonton Transit has five operating garages (including a LRT and DATS facility), and an information centre located in Churchill Station. Mobile Equipment Services (MES) performs fleet maintenance in four centres, and one heavy repair facility. The Edmonton Transit System is a division of the City of Edmonton's Transportation Department.

On a typical day, ETS carries about 16 per cent of Edmonton's population.
