The Edmonton SmartTravel app will provide drivers with important information while they are driving as well as real-time warnings of weather factors, disruptions and enforcement.

What is the purpose of the Edmonton SmartTravel?
The purpose of the app is to improve traffic safety by providing audio alerts to drivers when they are approaching speed-limit changes, high collision areas and school zones.
Who is the developer?
The app was developed as part of a joint research project between the City of Edmonton Office of Traffic Safety and the University of Alberta Centre for Smart Transportation to study the use of mobile applications for improving traffic safety.
Do I need a data plan to run this app?
It is not necessary. When you do not have a data plan, you can download or refresh the app when you have free wifi connection. When you drive, the app will run automatically but will not take any data other than tracking your GPS location and comparing your location with the app data that is already stored in your phone. However, a data plan is required for you to receive push notification messages.
Does this app comply with the Distracted Driving Legislation (Bill 16)?
Yes, 100% compliance. Once the app is running, the user does not need to touch the app to get a warning message. When the user’s vehicle starts to move at a speed of at least 20 km/h, the app will automatically show only the logo and button “Press this button to see the app only if you are not driving!”
Do users need to run this app each time they get into the vehicle?
No.  When the user is not driving at a speed of at least 20 km/h, the app will stay quietly in the background, and the GPS location and speed will be checked every 5 minutes to save the battery power. When the app detects a speed of 20 km/h or higher, the alert system will be activated to give alerts.
Are school zone alerts only during school hours when speed restriction is in place?

Yes. The app includes time (8am-4:30pm) and school days based on the information given in the EPSB calendar.

Will I keep hearing the warning messages all the time when I am driving?
The app will give voice-warning messages only if you are approaching the identified high-collision locations, school zones, or when the speed limit changes.
Is the SmartTravel app 100% accurate in speed limit and school zone warnings?
The app is meant to assist drivers. We cannot guarantee that it is 100% accurate. Using the Edmonton SmartTravel app does not take the onus off drivers to read speed limit and construction-zone signs, watch for pedestrians or drive according to the conditions.
How do I install the SmartTravel app?
Please follow the installation process described in the app manual.
User Manual for iOS
User Manual for Android
Does this app collect and store user locations?

The SmartTravel app requires access to your driving location. The purpose of this access is to compare your location with the identified locations in the database and then provide the appropriate warning message when the two locations match. However, the app can collect and store both location and speed related data from accelerometer and gyroscope sensors of your smartphone.

This data will be used for statistical analysis to identify if the SmartTravel app has a significant impact in changing driving behaviours. The analysis will be done based on the aggregated data of all users and not per-individual basis. Users have the option to not participate in this analysis, and then the location and speed data of those users will not be collected.  They can also opt out at any time. Personal information is not linked to the data collected.

Why doesn't the SmartTravel app work after I upgraded my phone's operating system?

The app is under review for an update and enhancement. Once that is complete, it will work with newer operating systems.
