Advisory Board on Services for Persons with Disabilities (ABSPD)

What We Do

  • Recommend changes in City policy and practice to encourage inclusion and accessibility.
  • Advise City Council, City departments and citizens on disability issues.
  • Refer Edmontonians to organizations that will address their specific needs.
  • Promote accessible transit and parking.
  • Consult on new construction and retrofitting.
  • Stay informed about emerging trends in disability issues and adapt best practices to help increase public awareness and inclusion.
  • Change attitudes and stereotypes about people with disabilities.
  • Position Edmonton as a leader in diversity and inclusion.

Our city is enriched by the contributions of persons with disabilities. Our community is strengthened when everyone is included.

The City of Edmonton has established initiatives to enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities:

  • Recreation programs for people of all levels of ability and income.
  • Free access to City recreation facilities for people on AISH (Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped).
  • More accessible public transit through initiatives such as subsidized transit passes for AISH recipients living in Edmonton and computers in DATS vehicles which give operators updated trip information from customers.
  • Audible traffic signals and pedestrian-friendly sidewalk curb cuts that improve safety and accessibility for people using wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, strollers and bikes.
  • Accessible taxi licences.
  • Accessible homes included in the First-Time Homebuyers Program.
  • The first Canadian city to establish policy requiring that all new and retrofitted playgrounds be accessible.
