Intra-Municipal Energy Transfer Loop

A unique community energy project will heat a Strathcona County neighbourhood using the residual heat and synthetic gas (syngas) produced by the Edmonton Waste-to-Biofuels Facility.

Strathcona County will use this innovative alternative to natural gas in a district heating loop to provide heating and cooling energy for residents and institutions in the new Emerald Hills Urban Village of Sherwood Park.

This renewable energy project will directly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by about 7,000 tonnes per year when operational in 2012.

The integration of renewable energy produced from community wastes (after recycling and composting) into the district heating loop makes this project is a true demonstration of recycling.

The project is funded by a $7.45 million grant from the Government of Alberta, as part of the ecoTrust program.
