Environmental Management System

The Waste Management Branch (WMB) has consistently placed a high priority on protecting the environment.

On August 30, 2006, the Waste Management Branch (WMB) received ISO 14001:2004 Certification for its Environmental Management System (EMS).

What is Enviso - ISO 14001?

Enviso is name of the City of Edmonton's environmental management system. It is based on the international standard ISO 14001 and provides us with a systematic method of managing and improving our environmental performance.

The ISO 14001 framework helps organizations comply with environmental legislation, prevent pollution and continually improve environmental performance. Achieving and maintaining ISO 14001 certification demonstrates that we are doing everything in our power to effectively manage our environmental responsibilities.

Enviso provides Waste Management with a tool to systematically manage the environmental impacts of our operations.  Enviso helps our Branch to:

  • Recognize and control our environmental risks;
  • Conserve materials, energy and other resources even more; and
  • Foster a greater awareness of environmental issues among employees and stakeholders.
