Aggregate Recycling

About the Project

The City of Edmonton recycles concrete and asphalt from reconstruction projects, private demolition, and household renovations.

Recycling concrete and asphalt provides an economical source of aggregates that are used to build and maintain the City's roadways.

Edmonton's Aggregate Recycling Facilities accept concrete and asphalt materials free of charge if asphalt and concrete sections do not exceed 80 cm2 (30 in2), rebar does not exceed 32" in length, and it is free of wire mesh.

The City has been recycling aggregates since 1978 More than 99% of all aggregate rubble in Edmonton is recycled Up to 200,000 tonnes of recycled aggregate materials are produced annually.

Materials Accepted

  • Hardened, plastic and reinforced concrete
  • Concrete truck washouts
  • Asphalt and asphalt grindings
  • Gravel
  • Soil cement
  • Bricks, paving stones, and tiles
  • Coarse and clean sand

Note: Asphalt and concrete sections cannot exceed 80 cm2 (30 in2). Rebar cannot exceed 32" in length.

Materials Not Accepted

  • Black dirt
  • Clay
  • Wood
  • Trees
  • Asphalt shingles
  • Stucco
  • Wire mesh
  • Concrete with steel mesh
  • Contaminants (oil, acid, transmission fluid etc.)

The Edmonton Waste Management Centre accepts smaller segregated loads of concrete and asphalt.

Commercial loads can be taken to the Edmonton Waste Management Centre, West or Southeast Aggregate Recycling Facilities.

Weather conditions may affect hours of operation. Call to arrange for site access or rubble inspection.
