Smoke Detector Program
In the event of a fire, a smoke detector is your first line of defense, and the statistics show it.
Over the last decade, 56 per cent of fire fatalities have been attributed to either a faulty smoke detector or the absence of a smoke detector in the home. In 76 per cent of fatal fires, dead or incorrectly installed batteries caused smoke detector failures.
The bottom line? Smoke detectors save lives.
That’s why Edmonton Fire Rescue Services and the Canadian Home Builders’ Association-Edmonton Region have teamed up to install new smoke detectors in aging Edmonton homes for the Smoke Detector Program™.
Residents of select neighbourhoods can expect a local firefighter at their door, armed with a step ladder, a screwdriver and a smoke detector—all the tools needed to check a smoke detector and replace it if necessary.
In addition to installing smoke detectors, firefighters will provide residents with information on how to prevent home fires and injuries.
Note: Though crews are unable to book appointments to install smoke detectors, there are plans to target different neighbourhoods over time.
The Smoke Detector Program™ is a joint partnership between Edmonton Fire Rescue Services, Edmonton’s Fire Fighter’s Union Local 209, and the Canadian Home Builders’ Association – Edmonton Region.
The smoke detectors will be provided to residents free of charge, thanks to the generous support of these sponsors:
