Firefighter Recruitment Medical Assessment
A physician conducts a complete physical examination. Tests are conducted by medical laboratories under contract to the City.
This examination ensures the candidates do not suffer from a health condition that may affect their ability to perform firefighter duties in a safe manner.
The medical consists of the following: Physical Examination, Audiometric Test, Pulmonary Function Test (PFT), Vision Test, Chest X-Ray (PA & Lateral), ECG, Lab Tests: CBC & Urinalysis (Includes a fasting Cholesterol & glucose).
Minimum vision and hearing standards are:
- Hearing of thresholds no greater than 30 dB at 500 Hz, 1000 Hz and 2000 Hz, without hearing aids
- Far visual acuity 20/30 or better in each eye without visual aids, colour vision of minimum pass Farnsworth D-15, and peripheral vision of a minimum 150 degrees with both eyes open and examined together (laser eye surgery completed by June 1, 2012)
Required Documents
Bring the following documentation on the day of your medical assessment:
- Results of testicular exam (males only). Results must be within 3 months of the pre-placement medical assessment date.
- Results of 3 stool occult blood samples. Results must be within 3 months of the pre-placement medical assessment date.
- Updated immunization records (MMR, polio, varicella). Please also provide information on your last tetanus/diphtheria vaccination and any hepatitis B vaccination.
