Firefighter Recruitment Fitness Assessment and Job-Related Test

Job-Related Tests:

  • Smokehouse maze (claustrophobia) test: complete an obstacle course in a dark room wearing a blacked-out face mask.
  • Ladder climb (acrophobia) test: climb up and down a 30 m (100 ft) ladder with a safety harness.
  • Extension ladder raise test: follow the direction of an officer to safely raise, secure, and lower the fly section of a vertically secured 8.5 m (28 ft) extension ladder.
  • Hose lifting/moving test: follow the direction of an officer to safely lift and move rolled 125 mm and 65 mm hoses from one hose rack to a second hose rack.

Fitness Assessment:

  • The EFRS (Edmonton Fire Rescue Services) is committed to physical fitness as a lifestyle.  Although you have been tested by an agency external to the EFRS, you will be expected to undergo peer fitness testing to ensure that you have maintained a fitness standard consistent with firefighter needs.  This testing will be done under the direction of the EFRS Health and Wellness Coordinator using peer fitness testers, i.e., firefighters.  The test will include: body composition, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and aerobic power.  If your performance does not meet base firefighter requirements, you may be retested by an independent external agency or excluded from the hiring process.

Note: The firefighter recruitment process is subject to change.
