Firefighter Recruitment Basic Requirements

Listed below are the basic requirements including required supporting documents and associated costs required at the various stages of the recruitment process.

Please note: Supporting documentation is not required at the time of application; however, you will be expected to produce original documentation at the various stages of the recruitment process.

Aptitude Test:

  • Non-refundable money order for $50 processing fee, payable to the City of Edmonton (cheque or cash will not be accepted)

Physical Fitness Test:

  • Non-refundable money order for $315 testing fee, payable to the City of Edmonton (cheque or cash will not be accepted)

Interview & Resume Evaluation:

  • Proof of Canadian Citizenship or legal permanent residence (certificate of citizenship and/or birth certificate, landed immigrant documentation)
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Driver Abstract with seven (7) demerits or fewer (dated on or after September 1, 2012)
  • Valid Class 3 Alberta Driver's Licence with airbrake endorsement or proof of equivalency indicating a Class 3 and Q endorsement or equivalent (by October 1, 2012)
  • An original Police Information Check or Certified Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Check that has not disclosed or located a criminal record or record of criminal convictions (dated on or after May 1, 2012).  Please note if you are unable to provide this document at this stage of the process, you will be required to provide a justification to Human Resources 
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in English under stressful conditions
  • Resume that outlines education, training, skills, and work experience

Eligibility List:

  • Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certificate and registration number with the Alberta College of Paramedics (by November 1, 2012).  Please note that a Restricted EMR will be reviewed by HR on an individual basis.

  • Reference Checks - When selected from the list to proceed to the next stage, the applicant will receive email notification requesting the names of 3 work related references

Medical Requirements:

All applicants who progress to the Medical Assessment stage will undergo a complete physical examination by a physician.  Please ensure you read the Medical Assessment stage of the process on our website for complete information.  (If an applicant is in doubt as to whether they will meet the requirements, they should seek medical advice prior to applying).
