Evacuation
Many disasters, either due to a natural disaster such as flooding or an accidental hazardous material release, may lead to the public having to take action through evacuation.
Evacuation Notice
Pre-warns people about a situation that may require evacuation. People should commence preparation for an alert by maintaining close contact with family members, gathering insurance documents, prescription medications, valuables and clothes. Residents should monitor media or listen for warnings from City officials.
Evacuation Alert
People are warned of imminent threat to life and property and are asked to be ready to leave on short notice. Be prepared for worsening conditions. A time frame, e.g. one hour will be given. The public will be given information on where to evacuate to (Reception Centre), instructions on how to get there and items to pack.
Authorities will alert the population at risk of the potential for evacuation because of the threat to public safety. Residents should be prepared to evacuate the area. This warning may be transmitted by a variety of methods, including:
• Alberta Emergency Alert*

• Door to door campaign with pamphlets delivered
• Telephone calls
*In 2011, the Alberta Emergency Public Warning System was upgraded and renamed “Alberta Emergency Alert”. Alberta Emergency Alert was developed to address the changes in technology as radio and television moved from analogue to digital.
Alberta Emergency Alerts are issued to assist the public by providing critical information about an immediate disaster, where it is occurring and what action needs to be taken.
Alerts are distributed to the public through various outlets including:
