Child Firesetters Project
Edmonton Fire Rescue Services has had a very successful ongoing Fire Setters program. The goal of the program is to intercede so that fire play does not manifest into intentional fire setting.
The program is divided into two categories:
- Child Fire Setters (Children 11 and under).
- Juvenile Fire Setters (Youths aged 12-17).
The program consists of an initial interview conducted by a Fire Investigator where a Juvenile Fire Setters form is completed during the interview. The Investigator then determines if the child or youth is a candidate for the program and make the appropriate recommendation.
In the case of youths ages twelve to seventeen, the Investigator makes contact with Edmonton Police Services and forwards the youth’s name, contact information, circumstances surrounding the incident and makes a recommendation to either submit the youth’s name to the Juvenile Fire Setters Program or request that a criminal investigation be initiated.
Once a child or youth’s name has been submitted to the program, a member from the Edmonton Fire Rescue’s Fire Prevention Section makes contact with the parent or guardian. Arrangements are made to meet with the child or youth and their parents and undertake an exercise to educate the fire setter to respect fire and to alter behaviors and attitudes about fire.
In some cases the Fire Prevention Officer teaches the family how to “fire proof” the home such as storing matches and lighters in areas that are not accessible to the child or youth.
