Greening Your Home

Furnace

  • Keep your furnace tuned up, well-lubricated and properly adjusted to reduce your energy use.
  • Replace furnace filters once a month to reduce furnace running time.
  • Consider purchasing an ENERGY STAR® qualified high-efficiency furnace.

Thermostat

  • Set your thermostat to 4-5°C lower when you are away and while you are sleeping.
  • Purchase a programmable thermostat. Regularly lowering your heat setting could save you up to $80 each year.

Lighting

  • Replace your regular lightbulbs with compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs), which use 75% less energy and last up to ten times longer.
  • Shut off all lights in unused rooms, avoiding unnecessary lighting.
  • When choosing paint colours for your home, opt for lighter colours that reflect light.

Weatherstripping

  • Weatherstrip all doors and windows to keep the heat inside and the cold outside.

Windows

  • Seal or caulk windows, doorframes, sills and joints.
  • Apply plastic window covers to prevent the loss of heat.

Drapes & Blinds

  • Open south-facing drapes on sunny days, letting in a natural source of heat.
  • Close drapes and blinds at night.
