Master Naturalist Program

Please note: We're not longer accepting applications for the 2009 Master Naturalist Program. Thank you for your interest, and please stay tuned for information about next year's program, which will be held in the spring of 2010!

We are very grateful for the support of the J. W. Grant MacEwan Environmental Studies Program at Grant MacEwan College in hosting this program.

Edmonton's natural areas have tremendous ecological, social, educational and economic value. If that value is to be preserved, it is up to us as a community to be good stewards of these ecologically-rich places!

As a step in this direction, the City of Edmonton has launched a new "learn and serve" program for Edmontonians who are interested in learning more about ecology and naturalization in our city, and being involved in the stewardship of local natural areas. Modeled on the City of Edmonton’s popular Master Composter & Recycler Program, the brand-new Master Naturalist Program ran for the first time this June.

Master Naturalists attended 35 hours of training and field trips, and will in turn volunteer for 35 hours in activities that support natural areas management, protection, and education.  They will help to build community capacity, knowledge and enthusiasm for the ongoing stewardship of local natural areas.

The course was held at Grant MacEwan College (City Centre Campus), with field trips to local natural areas. It was taught by an excellent team of community and City staff members, all with expertise and experience in natural areas stewardship.
