Urban Forestry

Taking care of our urban forest preserves the natural environment within our city and improves the quality of the air we breathe.

Maintaining healthy trees along our streets and in our parks involves planting, pruning, watering, fertilizing and repairing.  We also replace dead and damaged trees and control the spread of diseases and insects.

On September 21, 2011 join the celebration of Canada's first National Tree Day. This is a day to celebrate all of the great things trees do in our city. You can organize a community tree planting, plant a tree in your yard, hug a tree, or teach a child about the importance of trees.

Trees on 99 avenue from 107 to 109 street will be able to spread their roots when growing conditions are improved as part of the Federal Building Centennial Plaza project. Underground frames (silva cells) will support the new sidewalks, while providing more soil for tree growth. Once complete, this site will allow trees to grow bigger and healthier.

The new plaza will have a tree-filled garden representing Alberta’s six natural regions (Boreal Forest, Rocky Mountains, Foothills, Parkland, Grassland and Canadian Shield) and an agri-zone will highlight Alberta’s variety of grasses.
