The average life expectancy of most urban trees is more than 50 years. If properly maintained, they can live 100 to 250 years.

The Value of Trees

The City of Edmonton maintains a total of 309,000 ornamental trees. The value of these trees is estimated at over $1.2-billion. The average boulevard tree is worth $2,400 to $8,000 and can reach $58,000 for elm trees larger than 102 cm (40 inches) in diameter. Currently 20,000 of the trees in the City's inventory are vacant sites.

With an annual tree maintenance budget of $5,695,000 the City

  • maintains the municipal forest through scheduled neighbourhood  pruning, removal of dead, dying or diseased trees, stump grinding, replanting, mulching, and stake removal
  • waters trees that are newly planted, damaged by construction or suffering from disease
  • responds to emergency pruning call outs
  • inspects all trees planted by developers and other City departments before taking them into inventory
  • inspects trees offered for donation and coordinates the tree moves
  • handles police reports (vehicle collisions involving City trees)
  • investigates claims against the City that involve City trees
  • deals with public inquiries about City trees
  • develops programs to educate the public as to the benefits of trees through a variety of events such as Arbor Day.
    conducts research on new design and construction methods to protect trees
  • is mandated through the Corporate Tree Management Policy to preserve and protect the City’s municipal tree canopy
