CCCU Volunteer Safety
At Capital City Clean Up (CCCU), volunteer safety is our first concern.
Please keep the following information in mind whenever you’re taking part in a CCCU activity.
Always
- Try to work with a partner or small group.
- Carry a cell phone if available - especially if working alone.
- Only take part in CCCU activities during daylight hours.
- Be familiar with the area in which you are volunteering.
- Dress for the weather.
- Wear proper footwear such as runners or work boots.
- Use sunscreen, hats and sunglasses.
- Carry drinking water with you.
- If you have an allergy to insect stings, please carry the necessary medication in the event of a sting.
Volunteer Safety During Litter Pick Up
Do
- As an adopt-a-block volunteer, wear your pinnie over your shirt or jacket to be identifiable to the public.
- Wear gloves to protect your hands. Wash/sanitise them after picking up litter.
- Please record any graffiti that you see on fences, buildings and street fixtures and report it by calling 311.
Do Not
- Work in inclement weather.
- Walk on roadways.
- Touch or pick up sharp objects, chemicals including partially filled oil or household cleaner bottles, syringes or any other hazardous materials.
- Make note of your location and call 311 or 780-414-7373 for pickup.
- Pick up anything that too heavy to lift or too large to fit in a garbage bag.
- Make note of your location and call 311 for pickup.
- Wade in any body of water to retrieve garbage including the river, streams, creeks, community ponds, or dugouts.
- Enter or disrupt a homeless camp. If you encounter a homeless camp on Parkland whether occupied or not, leave it and the occupants alone.
- Take note of the camp location and report it to your Captain or directly to the Parks Branch at 311.
- Climb any steep embankment or ravine side to get that elusive piece of trash. Slopes can be wet, muddy and unstable at any time of the year.
- Compress garbage. Only fill the bags to 2/3 capacity. This will allow you to tie off bags without compressing trash inside.
- Transport trash bags close to your body to avoid getting poked by a sharp object that may have been unknowingly placed in the bag.
- Allow children to collect litter without parental supervision.
- Collect litter during rainy or stormy conditions.
- Trespass on private property.

- The GMP has small “A” frame boards that can also be borrowed to block off areas.
- Wear all supplied protective clothing including eye glasses, coveralls, face masks and gloves.
- Wear appropriate footwear and clothing – old clothing and footwear to avoid ruining good clothes and shoes.
- Replace lids immediately on all opened containers including paint and cleaning supplies.
- Follow the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for each paint or product used for removal.
