Worldwide Design Competition to Take Off
May 19, 2010
World-leading sustainable community wanted for City Centre Airport lands
The City will look worldwide for design firms to redevelop the Edmonton City Centre Airport lands into an environmentally sustainable, transit-oriented, mixed-use development for 30,000 residents.
“This is one of the largest projects ever undertaken by our City,” says Mayor Mandel. “We want this to be a world-leading, environmentally-friendly community that is integrated with Light Rail Transit and offers residents a range of lifestyles while minimizing their ecological footprint. We want creative ideas, designs, and foresight for this development.”
A two-stage competition will be held. The first stage involves a qualification process from May 19 until June 30. The second stage begins July 15 when up to five firms will be chosen to participate in a request for proposals for the design competition. The deadline for the design proposals is October and the City will announce a winning bid in November.
“We want to attract the right firms to make this work,” added Mandel. “Ideally, the right firm will have a combination of local expertise and international experience to bring their best ideas to the table.”
“This is a very exciting time for the City,” says Simon Farbrother, City Manager. “It's an opportunity to bring Council's strategic direction to life and showcase Edmonton's creativity. We intend to select a firm by the end of this year, and then move into the master planning process.”
A selection committee of local and international representatives will select the final applicants to compete in a design competition. A $50,000 honorarium will be offered to a short listed group of teams who participate in the final design competition.
