World’s Leading Traffic Safety Experts Return to Edmonton

April 20, 2010

International Conference on Urban Traffic Safety

The City of Edmonton’s Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), the Edmonton Police Commission (EPC) and the Capital Region Intersection Safety Partnership (CRISP) will host Edmonton’s International Conference on Urban Traffic Safety April 25 – 29 at the Sutton Place Hotel.

“Edmonton is demonstrating leadership in its evidence based-approach to improving traffic safety in our city,” says Gerry Shimko, OTS Executive Director and chair of CRISP. “Sharing best practices and leading research from around the world will give all of our delegates some of the tools they need to address challenges in their own communities.”

With its impressive line-up of cutting-edge traffic experts, the conference is intended to challenge old notions about traffic safety and generate innovative ideas on how to improve the safety of Edmonton’s roads. Sessions and workshops will focus on themes including evidence and research; knowledge transfer; and local application.

“Traffic safety is a shared responsibility,” says Shimko. “Drivers must take personal responsibility for the safety of all those who share the roads including pedestrians, cyclists and other motorists. People in our communities should be able to use the streets with a reasonable expectation of safety, and we need to work together to make that happen.”

In conjunction with the conference, a public forum will be held on the evening of April 27 at the Sutton Place Hotel. The keynote speakers, including Melissa Wandall, Tom Vanderbilt and David Engwicht, will discuss the power of community involvement and will highlight community based traffic safety initiatives already operating in Edmonton.

“Targeted enforcement at high-collision corridors has had an impact on making Edmonton streets safer, but ultimately we need to engage the community at the grassroots level to change dangerous driving habits,” said Brian Gibson, Chair of the Edmonton Police Commission. “The community forum gives residents a voice and the opportunity to help shape the safety of their neighbourhoods.”
