Very Limited Environmental Contamination on City Centre Airport Lands
September 09, 2010
Drilling and testing reveal only three locations needing further work
An independent consultant’s report has confirmed that environmental contamination on the Edmonton City Centre Airport Lands is very limited.
AECOM drilled and sampled at 25 locations covering more than half the property and found only three needed follow up to determine more specifically the extent of the contamination, although it is anticipated to be limited.
“This is good news, as it will allow developers and future homeowners to have confidence in the safety of this neighbourhood,” said Phil Sande, Executive Director, City Centre Airport Land Redevelopment Project. “It also means that the City’s potential clean up liability is expected to be very limited in scope and cost. Clean up costs can be more well-understood, and likely quite reasonable.”
This information will help the City in its risk management with regards to any contamination on the site. This could allow the City to look after the contamination at time of redevelopment thereby reducing costs to the City.
The 25 locations that were tested were selected following a thorough review of previous environmental information to identify areas of potential environmental concern as a result of on or off-site current and historical activities. This Phase I review included a historical evaluation, visual site inspection, and a review of environmental reports completed for the site and at adjacent properties.
The summary report is available on the City’s website. Full hard copies of the report are available upon request.
