Transit Ninjas Promote the Every Day Way at the U of A
December 03, 2010
Young people passionate about public transit showed their appreciation for transit riders and promoted the website Transit Is during the early morning commute at the University of Alberta.
Volunteers with the City of Edmonton's Youth Council chatted with passengers, gave them lapel stickers, and directed them toward a website explaining the benefits of taking transit and how they are supporting sustainable transportation.
“It’s smart to take transit,” said Keita Hill, Chair of the Youth Council’s Transportation Subcommittee. “It’s a practical choice that benefits both the environment and people’s financial, physical and mental health. You can escape rush hour and road rage with ETS!”
Volunteers created the Transit Is campaign to highlight the benefits of taking public transportation and to thank transit users for making smart and sustainable choices. It also encourages others to get on board through a social marketing campaign.
“This type of active support by young transit riders speaks volumes about the positive future of public transit in our fine city,” said Charles Stolte, Manager of Edmonton Transit.
As outlined in the City’s Transportation Master Plan, sustainable transportation modes provide many benefits to Edmontonians, including improved health, quality of environment, and an enhanced urban form.
The Transit Ninjas will be out in force at another Transit Centre in the New Year.
