Time to Come Clean for the Environment

Edmontonians can beat the washday blues with a new rebate program that will help save them money and preserve the environment.

The City of Edmonton Office of Environment, through its CO2RE program, is offering a $75 rebate to Edmonton residents who purchase an Energy Star rated, high-efficiency clothes washer between July 1 and December 31, 2010.

“If Edmonton is going to have a successful environmental strategy we need all Edmontonians to get involved,” says Councillor Don Iveson. “That means we all need to make a commitment to reduce our impact on the environment. The Washing Machine Rebate program helps us do that and save money on utilities.”

The rebate program helps bring attention to The Way We Green, the City’s environmental plan, which is being developed with community consultation through 2010 and will emphasize that small changes in our day-to-day lives can have a big impact on the environment.

Today’s high-efficiency, Energy Star rated washing machines can save an average family $150 a year in utility costs. The machines use an average of 30-50 per cent less water and 50 per cent less energy than used by older model washing machines. As well, a high efficiency washing machine can reduce an average household’s CO2 emissions by up to one tonne per year.

The City of Edmonton Washing Machine Rebate program has a budget of $115,000 to provide 1,500 rebates of $75 each. The Office of Environment will not provide rebates for high efficiency clothes washers purchased before July 1 or after December 31.

The rebate program is being administered for the City of Edmonton by the non-profit organization, Climate Change Central, which also administers a rebate program by the Government of Alberta. The partnership ensures that Edmontonians applying for rebates will only need to make one application to one agency.
