See the Lights? Hear the Sound? Look Around!

See the lights? Hear the sound? Look around!

October 26, 2010

An ambulance is transporting a critically injured patient to the hospital. A fire truck is en route to a fire that could spread quickly to other homes in the area. A police car is responding to an urgent 911 call for help.

These are critical situations where emergency responders need the co-operation of drivers. Unfortunately, they continually experience delays getting to the scene of an emergency as a result of motorists who do not follow rules of the road.

When an emergency vehicle (ambulance, fire or police) is approaching from any direction and is sounding a siren, drivers must yield the right-of-way by:

  • Immediately moving clear of any intersection.
  • Driving their vehicle to the right side of the road if it has one or two lanes.
  • Driving their vehicle to the nearest side of the road if it has three or more lanes. If you are in the centre lane, drive to the right side.
  • Remaining stopped until the emergency vehicle has passed and checking that no other emergency vehicles are approaching.
  • Staying at least 150 metres (493 feet) back when following emergency vehicles.

Watch an instructional video or read a brochure for more information about the rules of the road as they relate to emergency vehicles.
