RVs Shouldn’t Camp on City Streets

June 16, 2010

Now that camping season is in full swing, the City of Edmonton is reminding residents that RVs must be parked on private property to keep residents safe and streets clear.

“People tend to park their RVs on the street for an extended period of time during the spring and summer, but that isn’t safe and can cause a lot of conflict between neighbours,” says Josh Puchailo, Acting Parking Enforcement Coordinator with the Community Standards Branch.

“It’s hard for drivers and pedestrians to see around RVs parked on city streets, which can cause accidents. RVs also take up a lot more parking space than a regular car or truck, which can cause problems where parking is already tight.”

An RV can only be parked on a public street for 72 consecutive hours. The vehicle must then be taken off the street for at least 48 hours before returning. Trailers and fifth wheels must also be hitched to a vehicle when parked on the street so that they can be moved quickly in an emergency.

Motor homes, travel trailers, and fifth wheelers must be parked in a back lane parking area, without hanging into the lane or neighbouring properties. Until October 31, property owners without a back lane can park their RVs in the front or side driveway of their home, however the vehicle must be at least two meters from the sidewalk or curb.

RVs illegally parked on a street can be reported to the Edmonton Police non-emergency line at 780-423-4567. RVs illegally parked on private property can be reported to 311.
