The Grand Trunk Fitness and Leisure Centre, a popular northwest Edmonton recreation destination, has reopened to residents on time and on budget.

“Reopening the doors to Grand Trunk is reopening doors to renewed health and wellness and quality of life for our community,” said Councillor Ron Hayter. “Residents are very excited to get back into the facility to continue their recreation and fitness activities.”

The facility is open following a year-long closure for infrastructure upgrades.

“Grand Trunk is a tremendous asset, and the upgrades are a very positive investment in our community and in the future of our city,” said Councillor Kim Krushell. “It’s a legacy worth building on when we consider the impact recreation has on our lives.”

The recreation centre is a community hub, which is visited annually by more than 200,000 people for swimming lessons, children’s camps, drop-in swims and workouts, aquafitness classes, public skating and hockey.

The $5.4 million renovations make the facility more energy efficient and have extended its lifespan.

Improvements include:

  • Replacement of the upper and lower roof areas.
  • Rehabilitation of the building envelope walls.
  • Replacement of upper windows in pool and fitness centre.
  • Installation of new aquatic area heating and ventilation system (HVAC).
  • Addition of a new boiler system and expansion of mechanical room.
  • Reconfiguration of the steam room for safety.
  • New emergency power generator.
  • Conversion to energy-efficient lighting.

“Grand Trunk is just like home,” said Jim Acton, President of Edmonton Area Council One. “It’s wonderful to have a place where friends and family can come together and have fun. Our families have grown up here, and the facility has grown and changed over the years like the community has.”

The Grand Trunk arena was built in 1972, the swimming pool in 1975, and the fitness centre in 1990. The Grand Trunk Fitness and Leisure Centre upgrades are part of the City of Edmonton Strategic Plan and the Recreation Facility Master Plan.

The public can drop-in for a swim or workout, or register for a class at Grand Trunk. All of Grand Trunk’s amenities are in full operation and programs and services have resumed.  For more information, please stop by the facility, call 311, or visit online.

Grand Trunk is located on the Grand Trunk District Park Site at 13025 – 112 Street.
