Restored Edmonton Streetcar #33 is Hitting the Tracks
July 01, 2010
Edmonton Streetcar #33 has been restored back to its original 1912 condition and is now available for rides, thanks to the Edmonton Radial Railway Society. The Society and its members contributed $151,000 and more than 35,000 volunteer hours over 17 years to bring the car back to its former glory.
Following its unveiling on Dominion Day at Fort Edmonton Park, Streetcar #33 will be available for passengers to ride at Fort Edmonton Park. “We’ve worked on Streetcar 33 for a long time, so we’re thrilled it’s ready to go,” says Hans Ryffel, President of the Edmonton Radial Railway Society. “Following its season at Fort Edmonton Park, the streetcar will move to operate across the High Level Bridge.”
The St. Louis Car Company of St. Louis, Missouri manufactured Streetcar #33 for the City of Edmonton in 1912. It was one of 15 cars ordered by the City. A two-man crew consisting of a motorman and a conductor were required to operate the streetcar. The back of the rattan seats could be flipped over to allow passengers to travel forward at all times.
The Edmonton Radial Railway Society plans to restore at least one car of each type that once operated in Edmonton. In addition, it hopes to restore some significant examples from other Canadian cities and countries overseas.
