Record Number of City Yards Blooming this Year
August 12, 2010
With an amazing 1,520 nominations, an increase of 500 from 2009, more front yards than ever before were nominated in 2010 for the Edmonton in Bloom awards.
“Local gardeners put in a lot of work to make Edmonton beautiful,” said Rodney Al, Communities in Bloom Coordinator. “Front Yards in Bloom lets Edmontonians share our appreciation and say ‘thank you’ to our neighbours.”
This year, first place honours went to Alison and Jeff Muller at 9047-52nd Street (Ottewell). Second place went to Gordon and Maureen Arnett at 13846 Ravine Drive (Glenora), and third place winners were Lawrence and Joan Hohl at 15128-94A Street (Evansdale).
An address in Central McDougall was selected as a model Natural Front Yard for its “bee’s paradise.” An address in Parkview was selected as a model Edible Front Yard – with apples, tomatoes, peas, and potatoes looking beautiful and plentiful.
Capital City Clean Up presented two awards for tidiness. HSBC Bank Canada received the award for the North Saskatchewan River Clean Up and the award for community murals at a local baseball diamond recognized the work done by Mill Woods Little League and J. Percy Page High School.
“The Edmonton Horticultural Society is proud to support projects like Front Yards in Bloom because it really encourages Edmontonians to get out and garden,” said Jan Ogilvie, President of the Edmonton Horticultural Society, adding, “It’s just part of making Edmonton a beautiful and livable city.”
Yards and Gardens are nominated by neighbours and city staff to recognize the great work home owners are doing to make their yard, their community and their city more beautiful. Volunteers with the Edmonton Horticultural Society and community leagues across the City delivered signs and certificates to each nominated address.
A team of VIP judges then narrowed these addresses down to 45 finalists. The judges were City Councillor Ben Henderson, Edmonton Horticultural Society President, Jan Ogilvie, and Carol Read with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers.
