Whyte Ave to get permanent washrooms
Public urinals and toilets will be installed at seven locations on Jasper Avenue between 107 and 118 Streets as part of a pilot project that will run until mid-October.
Following on the success of a similar project on Whyte Avenue, the Jasper Avenue public facilities are part of Responsible Hospitality Edmonton’s (RHE) ongoing efforts to plan, manage and police vibrant places throughout the city where people can socialize in safety and comfort.
“Increased availability of public toilet facilities will help make one of Edmonton’s key hospitality zones cleaner and more accessible and attractive to residents and visitors,” says Darb Erickson, a coordinator for RHE. “This pilot project will ensure we’re on the right track and addressing the issue appropriately.”
In addition, permanent washrooms are being developed in Old Strathcona at the South Scona Parking Lot and at the northeast corner of Whyte Avenue and Gateway Boulevard. The temporary washrooms currently in the area will remain until the permanent structures are complete.
Public consultation in February and March confirmed the locations and designs for both sets of facilities. The proximity to pedestrian traffic, safety, and the impact on neighborhoods and businesses were considered. A survey included night time patrons, daytime shoppers, business owners, residents, and people who work in the area.
RHE is a community-wide, multi-disciplinary initiative established by the City of Edmonton to promote a safe, thriving, late-night environment in the city by planning, policing and managing the many aspects of hospitality zones throughout Edmonton.
