Package Sharp Objects and Keep Your Waste Collector Safe
March 01, 2010
The City of Edmonton asks that residents package sharp objects properly to prevent injuries to waste collectors.
Sharp objects, such as broken glass and mirrors, sheet metal scraps, and items with nails or screws sticking out should be packaged in a sturdy cardboard box. Seal the box with heavy-duty tape and label the box “sharps” to alert collectors. When setting the box out for collection, please ensure it stays dry so it doesn’t fall apart once picked up.
Material that doesn’t fit in a box, such as baseboards and lumber with nails and screws sticking out should not be put out with your waste. Instead, take these items to your nearest Eco Station.
Needles and syringes should be put in a sturdy plastic container such as a plastic vinegar or bleach bottle with a tight fitting lid. Seal the container with tape, label as “sharps” and take it to your nearest Eco Station.
In 2009, one-sixths of the injuries to waste collectors were caused by sharp objects that were improperly packaged.
