On Your Mark…Terwillegar Gets Set to Open
November 17, 2010
Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre is settling into the starter’s blocks in preparation for its opening in January, but Edmontonians who make the sprint and buy an annual pass for this state-of-the-art recreation centre early will be rewarded.
“We are thrilled to see everything falling into place for the opening of the Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre in January,” says Rob Smyth, Manager, Community Facility Services. “Our City vision describes Edmonton as a recreation city and we are really bringing that vision to life with this wonderful facility.”
The four ice rinks in the arena will open on Jan. 2, 2011, with the pools, gymnasiums, fitness centre, children’s area and community spaces opening on Jan. 29, 2011.
Starting on Dec. 1, there will be a special promotion for people buying annual passes to the Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre. The first 1,500 Edmontonians who take advantage of 2010 pricing and buy annual passes will receive a gift, which includes a logo’d sports towel and an embroidered fleece scarf.
Memberships can be purchased at any City leisure or recreation centre. Program registration opened on Nov. 1 and classes are filling up quickly. To register, visit www.edmonton.ca/ereg.
Those who visit Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre will be able to access a host of recreational, fitness, wellness and social experiences under one roof. It will truly be a community gathering place with a mandate to deliver experiences that enrich the lives of residents and contribute to making Edmonton a more livable city.
The new centre includes five main areas:
- an aquatic centre with a leisure and wave pool, whirlpool, a pool for lane swimming, and a lazy river and waterslide;
- a fitness centre with state-of the-art equipment;
- an arena with four NHL-sized ice rinks;
- a Flexi-Hall composed of three full-sized gymnasiums; and
- a children’s area with indoor playground, child-minding and program rooms.
In addition to offering Edmontonians a great experience, the new recreation centre will meet rigorous environmental standards. The facility will be eligible to meet the LEED Silver standard, an international recognition for environmentally-friendly buildings.
“The City of Edmonton is committed to meeting the LEED Silver standard for all new City buildings and we are pleased that we are in a position to achieve this goal with the Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre,” said Joe Kabarchuk, Manager, Buildings Design and Construction Branch, City of Edmonton. “This is in keeping with the City’s strategic goal of preserving and sustaining Edmonton’s environment.”
The total project cost is $160 million including design, planning, roads, landscaping as well as construction. The project is on budget.
