City targets illegal parking around schools to protect children
Notebooks and pens are cheaper at this time of year, but parents won’t get a deal if they park illegally when dropping their children off at school.
Parking Enforcement Officers are beginning a three-week, zero-tolerance parking enforcement campaign around schools to get drivers in the habit of parking legally.
“The no parking zones around grade schools protect our kids,” says Joshua Puchailo, Parking Enforcement Coordinator with the City of Edmonton. “Parking illegally around schools creates congestion and visual obstructions, so it’s harder for drivers to see kids crossing the street.”
The yearly campaign also focuses on the residential neighbourhoods, bus zones and emergency access routes around post-secondary institutions.
“Post secondary students need to be considerate of residents that live around their school by parking appropriately,” says Puchailo. “And of course, fire zones, disabled stalls and bus zones are never appropriate places to park.”
Parents dropping children off for school should park legally down the street from the school and walk their children to the door. Post-secondary students are advised to park in their college or university’s parking lot or walk, bike or take transit.
Vehicles parked illegally in these areas will be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense without warning. During last September’s campaign, officers handed out over 1,000 tickets of the 8,500 written during the year. The City also towed dozens of vehicles around schools and post-secondary institutions.
