Logo Files and Guidelines

The original City logo was developed in 1976 and adopted in 1977. After several decades, the time had come to refresh our corporate look. “The City of” has been removed from the logo. Renewed lettering—now integrated into a dark blue square for visual emphasis—retains the logo’s original character but in a cleaner, more modern form. Consistent with our past, it makes our mark in a new way.

The Visual Identity Standards are part of the City's Communications Directives, which apply to all City Employees, as well as contractors and consultants working on behalf of the City. Please note the logo has been endorsed as the City's primary visual identifier, limiting the creation and use of other logos. Refer to the City's Logo Use Policy for complete information.

The Visual Identity Standards will assist anyone assigned to design and/or create marketing materials for the City of Edmonton. Key elements are summarized below but ensure the Foundational Elements and Applying Style guidelines are reviewed before proceeding.

Please refer to Foundational Elements, pages 7-18, and the Logo Mastersheet.

The primary logo, which consists of the Edmonton wordmark and the blue square, is the basis of the City's visual identity system.

The logo is available in seven variants, each with rules on application and use.

Primary Logo

The wordmark may ONLY be used in applications where a lack of vertical space would reduce the primary square logo to an unreadable size (for example, on a narrow object like a pen or lanyard).
The wordmark is not to be used as an alternative to the primary square logo.

If you are a colleague or vendor who needs to use these fonts, single user or group licenses can be purchased. Otherwise, please use the alternate fonts.

2. Alternate Typeface
(for Office System)
  • Arial
  • Times New Roman

These typefaces are common on all Mac and PC platforms and do not typicaly require installation.

3. Alternate Typeface
(for Google System)
  • Open Sans
  • PT Serif

These fonts are available within all Google apps.

Grid System
Please refer to the Applying Style guide for more.

To ensure visual consistency, we have developed a grid system with a simple layout principle that includes:

  • Photography cropped away from two edges suggesting there is more to the graphic story
  • Colour block overlays should share one common edge with the image and one common edge with the document edge
  • Typography that aligns or breaks the grid according to content and message type
  • Logo which always aligns with the right portion of the layout
