Lace ‘em up at St. Francis Xavier Sports Centre

September 10, 2010

Edmontonians have a new place to walk, run, practice their golf swing or participate in other recreation activities. The St. Francis Xavier Sports Centre will be shared between students and the community, the result of a partnership between the City of Edmonton and Edmonton Catholic Schools.

The centre is owned and operated by the City of Edmonton. Students will have exclusive use of two gymnasiums during the school day while the remaining one will be open to the public. In the evenings and on weekends, it is available to the community.

“This sports centre is a great example of what we can accomplish by working together,” said Mayor Mandel. “We now have another outstanding facility for Edmontonians to be active and connect with others in their community. Places like this help to make Edmonton a great place to live.”

The $17.6 million sports centre was funded through substantial support from the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative and $3.9 million from Edmonton Catholic Schools (through Alberta Education). Edmonton Catholic Schools also provided the land.

"I'm pleased that the Government of Alberta can, through the Municipal Sustainability Initiative, support a project that will bring Edmontonians together through sport and recreation," said Honourable Hector Goudreau, Minister of Municipal Affairs. "This made-in-Alberta program provides predictable, sustainable funding for our province's municipal infrastructure projects and is a demonstration of our government's commitment to supporting and investing in our communities. Congratulations to the City of Edmonton on the completion of this project!"

“We are so pleased to be involved in this partnership with the City of Edmonton that benefits both students and the community,” said Debbie Engel, Board Chair for Edmonton Catholic Schools. “The St. Francis Xavier Sports Centre provides our students with a first-class facility just steps away from the school which maximizes the time students spend being physically active.”

The St. Francis Xavier Sports Centre features three full-size gymnasiums, an elevated walking/jogging track, spectator seating, and amenities to support a wide range of recreation activities such as basketball, volleyball, badminton, soccer, futsal and martial arts. It also boasts a cage that can be used for golf and batting practice.

The new centre adds to other facilities available in the Johnny Bright Sports Park, including Bill Hunter Arena, Jasper Place Bowl and Jasper Place Fitness and Leisure Centre. Construction on the sports centre began in the winter of 2009 and the facility opened its doors to the public in mid-July.

In addition to drop-in gymnasium times, registered and drop-in programs are also available at the centre.

St. Francis Xavier Sports Centre is located at 9240-163 Street.
