Cool off at water features and find free fun at playgrounds

Wondering how to keep your cool with the kids out of school? Grab a hat and head down to your neighbourhood playground. Free fun and adventure awaits!

Playground Programs:

In partnership with local community leagues, the City of Edmonton’s popular Green Shack playground programs return on July 5 for the summer season. Children aged six to 12 are welcome to join the games, sports, crafts, music, drama and special events. Children under the age of six are welcome, too, but must be supervised by their parent or guardian at all times.

Programs are led by City of Edmonton staff who:

  • Ensure participants play safely; parents are responsible for their children at all times and must be available in the event of an emergency
  • Are easily identifiable by their blue shirts and name tags
  • Are assisted by volunteer Leaders in Training
  • Have security clearance, are trained in First Aid and are certified specialists in FUN!

Note: Programs do not operate during lunch hour and staff may decide to cancel an activity due to inclement weather.

For the locations and hours of playground programs, check the City website or call 311.

Water Features:

A great way to cool off with the kids is a free romp at a City water feature, which includes wading pools, spray nozzles and spray decks. More than 40 neighbourhood water features open July 5 for summer, mostly on weekdays only.

One of Edmonton’s most popular wading pools will be open after recent renovations. The Kinsmen Park wading pool will be open seven days a week starting Saturday, July 3. Several large wading pools and spray decks are open as of Friday, July 2, including parks at: Castle Downs, Glengarry, Borden Park, Jackie Parker Recreation Area, Mill Woods and City Hall. These large spray parks shut down regular hours on August 29, but re-open for one last splash on the Labour Day weekend Sept 4 to 6.

A full list of locations with water features and their hours of operation are available online or call 311.

The playground programs and water features would not be possible without many community partners who contribute to the fun. A special thank you to Community Leagues for the use of their facilities and assistance in funding.
