Homeowners Offered Advice on Preserving Their Home’s Heritage

February 16, 2010

In order to ensure that older homes don’t lose their historic value, the City is once again offering a series of seminars on older home restoration. This Old Edmonton House series resumes the last week of February and runs into the spring.

“Older homes are potential heritage sites,” says David Holdsworth, Heritage Planner with the City, “so these seminars are offered to help people upgrade while retaining the heritage features of their homes.”

Holdsworth says the seminars teach homeowners details about renovation projects. The seminars could be also be a stepping stone for homeowners to apply to have their homes officially designated as Municipal Historic Resources and in turn receive financial incentives from the City to preserve the historical elements.

Holdsworth says the seminars benefit the City because potential properties that merit conservation are often brought to the City’s attention, making it possible to place them on the Inventory of Historic Resources.

There are eleven seminars in the series. Topics range from overviews of the City’s historic resources program, tips on how to research your home’s historic value, to hands-on classes on various types of older home renovation projects.

The first seminar in the series is on February 24; the last is on April 19.
