Festival Celebrates Aging and the Arts
June 01, 2010
Stay young at heart with the arts. That’s the theme behind Creative Age Festival which celebrates the importance of artistic and creative expression to seniors’ health and well-being.
“No matter what their age or their physical and mental ability, older adults can and should participate in the arts,” said Councillor Linda Sloan who deals with seniors’ issues on council. “Such participation, particularly when the available programs are of such high quality taught by professional teaching artists, can be transformative, liberating and downright fun. I highly recommend everyone join in and enjoy all the activities the festival has to offer.”
The third annual festival runs June 8 to June 16 at 12 venues throughout the city, most of which are free. Highlights include interactive workshops, an Arts Café performance series, theatre and choral festivals, an art exhibit, film screenings, and a symposium featuring Aboriginal perspectives on art and aging.
“The Creative Age Festival celebrates the contributions of Edmonton's seniors and showcases their vast experience and talent,” said Mayor Stephen Mandel. “Expressing ideas through the arts is a great way to stay young at heart and be a vital part of our city's future.”
The public is invited to the festival launch on Tuesday June 8 at 10am in the City Room at City Hall. It will feature performances and speakers from the Festival, symposium and related events.
