Edmonton’s Newest Recycling Partner Gets Pumped Up

The inflation of Canada’s largest energy-efficient dome at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre brings “closed-loop recycling” to Edmonton. Greys Paper Recycling Industries Ltd. is building a unique paper and glass recycling and manufacturing plant housed in two eco-friendly domes.
Closed-loop recycling takes waste and uses it to make a new, similar product that can then be recycled again. Greys Recycling will be producing new paper products from Edmonton’s waste paper.
“Closing the loop is consistent with Edmonton’s recycling philosophy and this project provides an exciting opportunity for all residents and businesses to get involved by using products made from the waste we produce,” said City Councillor Ben Henderson.
“My company was attracted to Edmonton because we think our plant is a good fit for a waste management centre with so many innovative waste processing facilities,” said Rajan Ahluwalia, CEO of Greys Recycling. “We’re proud of our partnership with the City of Edmonton.”
Both domes are highly energy-efficient, with R60 insulation, and use solar sun pipes for daytime lighting, and waste heat generated at other facilities at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre. The large dome will house the paper recycling plant, and the small dome will hold the glass recycling plant.
Greys Recycling will use an eco-friendly process to recycle waste paper, cardboard, white cotton and denim into paper products. Waste glass will be recycled into interlocking paving bricks.
The City of Edmonton will provide Greys Recycling with paper collected at 82 City offices and facilities. Greys Recycling is currently collecting paper for processing once the facility is operational in early 2011.
