Edmonton Salutes WWII Vets on 65th Anniversary of Victory in Europe / Liberation Day

Public invited to ceremony in Churchill Square on May 5
May 2010 marks the 65th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands by mostly Canadian troops (Liberation Day), and Victory in Europe (VE) Day.On May 5, veterans, soldiers and their families will join Mayor Stephen Mandel in a special ceremony to commemorate this historic occasion.
At 11:30am representative WWII veterans will parade down Jasper Avenue from 103rd Street to City Hall (expect traffic delays for approximately 30 minutes).
Starting at noon in Churchill Square, representative veterans will be saluted and presented with specially-commissioned 65th anniversary medallions in recognition of the role they played and the sacrifice they made during this defining moment in our history. Intergovernmental Relations Minister Iris Evans and other dignitaries will also be in attendance.
The ceremony will be followed by receptions for veterans in the Citadel Theatre and the Dutch Canadian Club.
Medallions will also be available through local legions in the weeks following the May 5th event.
