Edmonton in the top five on the new Canadian edition

Edmonton has landed a prime spot in the green properties on the new Canadian MONOPOLY board.

Edmontonians voted the City into the second most valuable real estate section on the popular board game, joining Calgary and Sarnia. Edmonton climbed the rankings with a surge of votes in the final weeks of the competition.

“We’re absolutely thrilled that Edmonton earned one of the top five spots on the new Canadian MONOPOLY board,” said Mayor Stephen Mandel. “How appropriate that we’ve landed a green property, given the City’s environmental leadership and our beautiful river valley.”

“Edmontonians can be proud of their voting efforts to get us on board,” added Mandel.

Hasbro held a contest in early 2010 to select the cities for the latest edition of MONOPOLY. The 22 cities with the highest number of votes have a property featured on the game board.

“Edmonton is a great city with a lot to offer. This gives people interested in Edmonton another reason to come visit our city,” said Mary Pat Barry, Edmonton’s Communications Branch Manager. “The Edmonton experience is second to none, and one of the reasons we’re one of the top five Canadian cities on the board.”

The City encouraged Edmontonians to vote Edmonton in the MONOPOLY contest by holding a mock arrest of former councillor Michael Phair.
