Eckankar Share Their Faith Through Display at City Hall

December 01, 2010

Edmontonians now have an opportunity to learn about the Eckankar religion at City Hall.

A display highlighting the teachings of Eckankar was unveiled at City Hall December 1 by the Edmonton Interfaith Centre for Education and Action. It is part of the City’s Celebrating our Faiths program which was developed jointly with the Interfaith Centre. It is intended to create a greater awareness and understanding of Edmonton’s diverse faith communities.

Displays depicting different faiths are rotated on a regular basis. Since 2006 over 18 different faiths have been featured.

In welcoming participants to City Hall, Mayor Stephen Mandel said the City was pleased to be hosting different faith groups like Eckankar on a regular basis. “We can all be proud to be a part of a richly diverse community in which we have the opportunity to learn about, acknowledge, and respect the many faiths and cultures of our people.”

The Eckankar religion teaches that there is an audible life current known as the ECK or Holy Spirit that connects each person with the heart of God. Len Gierach, ECK Cleric and the launch coordinator says, “We believe ECK can be experienced as inner Light and Sound. We also believe that through study and practice of the Spiritual Exercises of Eckankar, people can recognize the Light and Sound of God as it touches lives and brings increased divine love.”

The display at City Hall will run through December. All Celebrating our Faiths displays at City Hall are open to viewing on weekdays from 7am to 10pm, Saturdays from 9am to 5pm, and Sundays and holidays from 11am to 5pm.
