Crews Spring Ahead to Early Start on Pothole Repairs and Street Sweeping
March 31, 2010
City crews are springing at the chance to be able to get a head-start on its street sweeping and pothole repair programs for 2010.
“Although there is still some snow in a few areas, we have started some preliminary work on city roadways,” says Roland Aitchison, Superintendent of Operations, Roadway Maintenance for Transportation. “Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve been able to get some sweeping done on major roads concrete medians, and to get a jump on our pothole program. Once the snow and ice is gone from gutters and boulevards, we will launch a full-scale street cleaning campaign.”
Clean up of Edmonton’s 4,700 km of major roads, residential streets, alleyways and boulevards takes approximately nine weeks for crews to complete. At the same time, pothole crews will begin filling and patching potholes; over the course of the spring maintenance program, between 450,000 and 470,000 potholes will be fixed.
Although Roadway Maintenance tries to find and fix as many potholes as possible, motorists are also asked to let the City of Edmonton know about issues by reporting potholes through 3-1-1 or online at Report a Pothole. Motorists are reminded to drive with extreme caution when approaching or passing maintenance crews.
As the City of Edmonton gets to work on its sweeping and maintenance programs, Capital City Clean Up is asking citizens to do their part in keeping Edmonton clean through a new initiative, the 15 to Clean Challenge. Between April 25 and May 2, people throughout the city are asked to take 15 minutes to pick up garbage from sidewalks, trails and buildings in both downtown and residential neighbourhoods, as well as report graffiti by calling 3-1-1 or emailing 311@edmonton.ca.
