Council Passes 2012 Sewer and Waste Utility Budgets

December 05, 2011

City Council has passed the 2012 Capital and Operating Budgets for Sanitary and Stormwater Drainage Utilities, and the Waste Management Services Utility, with the total rate increase for an average Edmonton household of about $7.23 per month, down from the original proposed budgets.

“Throughout the budget process, both utilities successfully found ways to reduce costs and find efficiencies,” said Mike Koziol, General Manager of Infrastructure Services for the City of Edmonton. “Both Drainage Services and Waste Management Services are proactively working to provide long-term sustainability for their operations to serve a growing city.”

Council approved the budget which sets the rates for the Sanitary Drainage Utility, reduced from the proposed rate increase of $4.77 down to $4.03 per month, and a rate increase for the Stormwater Drainage Utility of $1.34 per month, down from the proposed rate increase of $1.46. Combining these two utilities, the average residential customer will see an increase of $5.37 per month, or $64.44 per year.

Drainage rate increases provide funding for replacement, rehabilitation and repair of aging infrastructure. The increase will also enable Drainage Services to accelerate capital programs to coordinate with roadway re-construction works under the Council approved Neighbourhood Renewal Program.

Council approved rates for the Waste Management Services Utility, reduced from the proposed rate of $33.60 down to $33.20 per month for single family households, and from the proposed rate of $21.83 down to $21.58 per month for multi-family households. Single family households will see an increase of $1.86 per month, or $22.32 per year, and multi-family households will see an increase of $1.21 per month, or $14.52 per year.

Edmonton's world-leading waste management system is shifting from landfilling to more environmentally responsible processing of waste. The City's goal is to divert 90 per cent of household waste from landfill by 2015.

Drainage Services and Waste Management Services are completely self-funded through monthly utility fees, and not through the City’s property taxes.
