Council Approves Edmonton's First Long-Term People Plan

The Way We Live

July 07, 2010

Edmonton City Council has approved the city's first long-term people plan, laying the foundation to make Edmonton a more livable city.

The Way We Live: Edmonton's People Plan is a 10-year, strategic plan that sets directions, establishes priorities and guides decisions about services that contribute to the health, safety and well-being of Edmontonians.

“This is a plan that gives voice to Edmontonians' desire to create a caring, connected city where people of all ages, backgrounds, cultures and income levels have the opportunity to succeed,” says Paul Loosley, Director, Community Services.

The Way We Live was created with input from thousands of Edmontonians.

“This plan provides a roadmap for the future of people services,” says Loosley. “It gives all City departments a comprehensive set of strategic policy directions to guide and coordinate people services over the next decade. This plan builds upon, integrates and adds to the individuals, organizations and communities who contribute to Edmonton's quality of life.”

Many of the strategic initiatives identified in the plan are being implemented through existing City plans and programs. City Administration will work over the next several months to develop an implementation plan for remaining components. The implementation plan will be brought back to Council.

After thousands of residents provided input in Edmonton’s most comprehensive consultation project, City Council established in 2008 a City Vision -- a creative description of the city we want Edmonton to become in 2040. The Way Ahead outlines six 10-year goals to make the City’s vision a reality, including making Edmonton one of Canada's most livable cities. The Way We Live: Edmonton's People Plan will advance that goal, and integrate with new plans that advance complementary goals, such as The Way We Move and The Way We Grow.
