2010 sets transportation infrastructure investment record
Edmontonians will benefit from better road conditions, revitalized neighbourhoods and paved roadways through $450M invested in transportation infrastructure this past summer.
“The City of Edmonton is committed to ensuring that our neighbourhoods remain great places to live, work and play,” says Bob Boutilier, General Manager, Transportation Department. “By investing in our communities, we make our city safer, easier to navigate, and attractive to both residents and businesses.”
A primary focus of this season’s construction was on improving infrastructure in Edmonton’s neighbourhoods. The communities that benefited from enhancements this year include:
Neigbourhood Renewal
- Preventative Maintenance
Roads resealed to expand their lifespan in Beacon Heights, Bergman, Goldbar, Quesnell Heights, Riverdale and Tipaskan. - Overlay
Roads repaved and sidewalk panels treated to eliminate trip hazards in McLeod, Balwin, Carlisle, Crawford Plains, Daly Grove, Lymburn, Patricia Heights, Summerlea and Westridge. - Reconstruction
Roads repaved, and sidewalks and streetlights replaced in Fulton Place, Parkallen, Rio Terrace and Sherbrooke. Reconstruction completed in Meadowlark and Lendrum.
The complete cost for neighbourhood renewal was funded through the combination of a dedicated 2 per cent property tax, provincial funding and cost sharing with property owners.
Other project milestones reached this past construction season include the opening of all bridges and ramps on the 23 Ave./Gateway Blvd. interchange, allowing traffic to flow freely beneath 23 Ave. and over top of the railway crossing. Construction on the Quesnell Bridge continues, with deck pours completed and work continuing on support structures, and the Dawson Bridge is slated to open in mid-December.
Work on key arterial routes was undertaken throughout Edmonton, with an additional ten locations added in the summer due to the contribution of federal Infrastructure Stimulus Funding. Arterial roadwork included:
