Conditions Placed on Iron Horse Nightclub

August 30, 2010

The City of Edmonton has placed five conditions on the business licence for the Iron Horse Eatery and Watering Hole, located at 8101 Gateway Boulevard. The conditions were recommended to the City’s Chief Licensing Officer in a letter of agreement between the business owners and the Public Safety Compliance Team.

The Iron Horse’s business licence was reviewed after a stabbing occurred at the nightclub on June 12, 2010. Three people received multiple stab wounds.

In his written decision, Chief Licensing Officer Randy Kirillo states that "[This stabbing] was not an isolated event; it appears to be a culmination of numerous violent incidents. It is the purpose of this business licence review to prevent similar dangers to public safety from occurring."

The five conditions require that the Iron Horse:

  • Maintain a daily incident log that tracks any problems and how the staff dealt with them.
  • Prepare and maintain a manual outlining the policies and procedures used in the business.
  • Obtain a cleared criminal record check from all new security staff before hiring them.
  • Keep a record of who is entering the club by scanning patrons’ identifications and maintain a list of banned patrons.
  • Adhere to all applicable federal, provincial and municipal laws and regulations.

The owners of the Iron Horse can appeal the conditions to the Community Standards and Licence Appeal Committee. An appeal has to be filed within 14 days of the Chief Licensing Officer’s decision.

The City will not be commenting further on this decision.
