City’s Washing Machine Rebate Program Nearing the End of Its Cycle
November 17, 2010
Now is the time to buy an energy-efficient, front-load washer, because the City’s Washing Machine Rebate Program is nearing its end.
The Washing Machine Rebate Program was launched July 1. It offers a $75 rebate for Edmontonians who purchase an Energy Star-rated, high efficiency clothes washer. This is in addition to the $100 rebate currently being offered by the Government of Alberta.
The program was due to end on December 31, but it has proven so popular with Edmontonians that funds won’t last to the end of the year. Qualified applicants who have already submitted an application for the rebate will receive their funds.
Edmontonians who hope to take advantage of the program should plan on purchasing their Energy Star-rated, high efficiency washer and submit their application to Climate Change Central right away.
“As usual, Edmontonians have jumped at the chance to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions,” says Mark Brostrom, Director, Office of Environment. “We are pleased that so many citizens took advantage of this opportunity and they should be proud that they’ve reduced their carbon footprint.”
Energy Star rated, high efficiency clothes washers use 30-50 per cent less water than older model machines and can save an average family $150 in utility costs each year. High efficiency washers also reduce an average household’s CO2 emissions by one tonne per year.
The Washing Machine Rebate program is part of the City of Edmonton’s CO2RE program and supports implementation of The Way We Green, Edmonton’s environmental strategic plan. The rebate program had a budget of $115,000 to provide rebates to 1,500 Edmontonians. Program applications were handled by Climate Change Central.
