Capital City Clean Up Keeps on Growing

Edmonton is a cleaner city thanks to litter and graffiti reduction programs from Capital City Clean Up.

A new mural program, a pilot street and alleyway clean-up program, as well as community graffiti wipe-out events and an Adopt-a-Block program were among the initiatives undertaken through the spring, summer and fall.

This year, the program helped:

  • remove an estimated 18,300 bags of litter, enough to fill the depth of the wave pool half way out to the middle at the West Edmonton Mall
  • collect 1,846 tonnes of oversized garbage through 12 Big Bin events, a 45 percent increase over 2007 and the equivalent of 156 elephants
  • wipe-out graffiti on more than 80,000 square feet of property, the equivalent area of Commonwealth’s football field
  • engage more than 8,700 volunteers in the Adopt-a-Block and River Valley Clean Up programs

Program manager, Don Belanger says the success of Capital City Clean Up this year proves Edmontonians take pride in their city by working within their communities to help make them cleaner and safer.

“Without the support of community and business volunteers, the Capital City Clean Up program wouldn’t have been successful,” said Belanger. “But now, we need to keep the momentum going as winter approaches.”

During the winter months, Capital City Clean Up will work with volunteer residential and business block captains to encourage Edmontonians to pick up litter both outside and in indoor public places like LRT stations. Edmontonians will also be encouraged to record and report graffiti.

“Just because there will be snow on the ground and cold temperatures outside doesn’t mean we should turn a blind eye to litter and graffiti,” said Belanger. “When you’re out and about pick up litter and report graffiti so we can get an early start on it once the snow clears in the spring.”
